Established in 1946, Nairobi National Park holds the distinction of being Kenya’s first national park and one of the only wildlife sanctuaries in the world located next to a capital city. The park was created in response to growing concerns over human-wildlife conflicts as Nairobi expanded, ensuring a protected space for Kenya’s rich biodiversity.
Before its official designation, the area was used as a seasonal grazing land by the Maasai people, who coexisted with the wildlife. However, as colonial settlements grew, fencing and land development threatened the natural migration routes of many species. Conservationists, led by pioneers like Mervyn Cowie, pushed for the creation of a national park to safeguard the region’s wildlife while still allowing for sustainable coexistence with the city.
Today, Nairobi National Park covers 117 square kilometers and is home to a thriving population of lions, rhinos, giraffes, buffaloes, cheetahs, leopards, and over 400 bird species. Despite its proximity to urban development, the park remains a crucial sanctuary for endangered species, particularly black rhinos, which are closely monitored through conservation programs.
With its unique blend of cityscape and wilderness, Nairobi National Park continues to play a vital role in Kenya’s conservation efforts, tourism, and ecological education, offering visitors a one-of-a-kind safari experience just minutes from the city center.
We had an amazing experience touring the National Reserve Park with Evan as our tour guide.
He was very professional, knowledgeable and knew his way around the park extremely well.
During the trip, Evan made sure that we were comfortable and had blankets should we need them. It was nice to see that nothing was too much trouble for him and he was always happy and smiling. We saw 18 different animals that morning and were able to get up close to many of them. Never felt rushed in any way so we could take our time taking videos and photos.
I’ve lived in Nairobi for more than 10 years and finally I decided to visit the park one Saturday and it was the best decision I made. The wildlife was rich, the views were impeccable and I just couldn’t believe that all this beauty was just a few minutes away from Nairobi CBD.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for a break from the city
